Hi, I’m Luke from O’Brien Engineering. Welcome to Material Mondays, where we focus on one of our specific materials from our extensive range.

Today, we’re going to take a closer look at the Trophy Plate, which can be purchased as a sheet or processed in-house – just as it has been for decades, using tool and die setups originally made by our founder, Alan O’Brien.

These come in a variety of discs and plate shapes, including the humble shield that features on most trophies and awards. Within the Trophy Plate range, you can get a high-quality mirror gold, mirror silver, and a beautifully brushed silver finish.

This unique product is made from 0.5mm aluminium with a special coating, making it ideal for punching. We can also apply adhesive backing, pre-cut and ready to go. Each piece comes with a protective plastic film to preserve the high-quality finish, ensuring that when you rotary engrave and complete your product, you simply peel it off to reveal a perfect result.

We utilise our in-house flywheel presses to punch these beautifully unique shapes. Alternatively, we can produce them using our CNC turret, and for custom shapes, we have high-end laser cutting capabilities. Across different materials and shapes, we produce hundreds of thousands of these every year.

Trophy shields and plates like these can be found across a huge range of sports and awards – and have been for decades. I’d like to think that almost everyone, at some point, has received one of these little shields or plates – maybe even some current Olympians have a few of them kicking around at home!
