Alright, so what we’ve got here is a stainless steel, laser-cut, precision-folded product. It’s similar to the original fire pit, but with one key difference. It follows the same R&D process developed by the team at Thorburns, but it’s been designed for a specific use case.
Brodie:
Yeah, we noticed a gap in the market for people who don’t carry a spare wheel on the back of their ute, but do run a dual jerry can holder. So, we designed this version to slip neatly over that jerry holder. It means more people can now have a fire pit and a rear shelf at the same time.
Luke:
Magic. And what about functionality? The original one doubled as a step – does this still work the same way?
Brodie:
Absolutely. This version still works as a step and a rear shelf. So, it’s really a 4-in-1 design: it’s a fire pit, a grill, a step, and a shelf.
Luke:
Was that always the intention from a design point of view? And what about these cutouts – are they for airflow or something else?
Brodie:
They’re actually to support the open grill function. We’ve designed it so four stainless steel rods can slide across the top, allowing you to grill over the fire. No bolts, no screws – just slide them in and out. Super easy to pack up and use.
Luke:
That’s cool. From our side, the process of making this is the same – it all comes down to precision and repeatability. Brodie’s team develops the product using tools like their 3D scanner, and once the design’s finalised, we laser cut everything with tight tolerances for folding.
