Hi everyone, I’m Luke from O’Brien Engineering, and I’m the Sales Manager here.
Today, we’re going to give you a bit of an insight into some of our hidden talents, including machinery import and some of the specialist materials we work with. So, let’s go check it out!
I think my main wish would be for people to understand the sheer scale of our setup and facilities. I’d say our hidden talent is really our ability to solve a wide range of problems for our customers. We’ve come from a trophy and engraving background, but we also have a strong engineering foundation.
Our expertise spans several key areas – trophy engraving and presentation, signage, general metal cutting, and fabrication. Fabrication itself is very broad. For example, we could be fabricating a panel for a house façade, or laser cutting a unique bracket for a small housing. These processes can involve cutting, folding, welding, inserting components, and sometimes outsourcing for powder coating.
A lot of our customers come to us with a problem, and our goal is to find the best solution. There may be ways we can assist that you haven’t even considered – whether it’s through our laser cutting, fabrication, or decades of specialist knowledge.
We also import one of the largest ranges of speciality materials, with close to 300 different materials in stock, including metals, plastics, and acrylics. Many of these materials are imported directly from overseas – such as laminate plastics and anodised aluminium, which are commonly used for engraving and sublimation.
In terms of steel products, we stock materials ranging from 0.9mm zinc-coated steel up to 25mm thick steel, all of which can be laser cut using our larger CO₂ laser cutter. Our cutting capabilities include both fibre and CO₂ laser technology. Our biggest machine is a 4,000W laser that can process sheets up to 3,000mm by 1,500mm and cut steel up to 25mm thick.
Here, we’re in the early stages of our fabrication and sheet metal processing area. We have a variety of press brakes designed to fold and bend materials. Currently, the team is folding steel with multiple bends, and all programming is completed prior to folding. The process involves scanning a barcode, loading up the correct tooling, adjusting the tonnage, and then folding the material into the final shape.
Right now, we’re standing near our Amada turret punch. We have over 400 different die sets, allowing us to process a wide range of shapes, sizes, and hole patterns at high speed.
Behind me, we have our acrylic cutting machine – the Kern OptiFlex. This machine can cut acrylic sheets from 2mm up to 30mm thick. A lot of people don’t realise that we can cut acrylic to such a high quality and thickness, as well as metals, giving us incredible versatility in our production processes.
In this area, we handle the bulk of our welding. This is where we apply the final finishing touches to certain products – whether it’s welding for waterproofing, structural strength, or sealing components. Welding is often the final step in ensuring a high-quality finished product.
We work with a huge range of customers – essentially anyone who requires fabrication, custom design, or bespoke manufacturing solutions.
Have you ever had an idea for something you’d like to create? Let us assist you in finding the right solution. With our state-of-the-art machinery, decades of experience, and practical know-how, we can help bring your ideas to life in a real-world manufacturing setting.
